Colts and Bears in the SuperBowl

Chicago BearsIndianapolis ColtsSo the Colts finally won a championship game, and it was against their nemesis the Patriots. Payton Manning finally got the monkey off his back. I was pulling for him throughout the entire game.

I was originally hoping for a Chargers/Saints SuperBowl last week. But the Chargers practically gave the Patriots the game. As you can tell, I am not a Patriots fan, not since they stole the Superbowl from the Panthers several years ago. I am a long time Steelers fan, since the 70s when Bradshaw was the QB. …and yes, I was a very happy camper last year.

I was pulling for the Saints, hoping that they could pull it off, but they just could not get it together. It would have been nice, and the icing on the cake of a great season if the Saints could have made it to the SuperBowl. Talk about coming a long way from only winning 3 games last season, granted not having a home might have had a wee-bit to do with it. New coach, new QB, and first time ever in a championship game. Going to the SuperBowl, and maybe even winning, would have been a true Cinderella story. Similar to the Carolina Panthers, second season in exisitance going to the NFC Championship game, and almost going to the SuperBowl as well. But alas…it was not meant to be.

Soo, we have the Bears and the Colts in the SuperBowl. Being a long time AFC fan, as well as wanting to see Payton Manning get a SuperBowl win - I will be pulling for the Colts. Never liked the Bears to begin with - not even in 85-86. Hopefully this does not create another monkey for Payton’s back - getting to the SuperBowl and loosing repeatedly

CNET: 13 reasons to doubt the iPhone hype

Unless you have been on another planet for the past several days, you know about the iPhone. Tech geeks around the globe are sporting woodies until June, when it is released. See my post below if you have not seem the keynote from Steve Jobs introducing and using the iPhone. It is well worth the watch. The hype however has now settled and folks are looking at it in more depth and pessimism is on the rise. So I urge you to take a look at the CNET article. However, keep something in mind that I think the author forgot. It is an Apple product. All the things you dislike about the iPod, sealed battery, only working with iTunes, having to go to Apple for support, etc. None of these things have changed - it is an Apple product. Apple is a proprietary product company, that charges a premium price for all their products, and everything is close source. …and how has that been working for them? Yeah, pretty damn well. Why, oh why, would they change?

50 Things We Know Now, That We Didn’t Know In 2005

So I am catching up on my Diggnation watching, and came across this one. Some very interesting things stated. For example:

16. A new planet described as a “super-Earth,” which weighs 13 times as much as our planet, exists in a solar system 9,000 light-years away.
– Did not hear about this.

19. Red wine contains anti-inflammatory chemicals that stave off diseases affecting the gums and bone around the teeth.
– Another reason to drink more red wine. woohoo..

20. A substance called resveratrol, also found in red wine, protects mice from obesity and the effects of aging, and perhaps could do the same for humans.
– …and another. You have to think, pretty soon someone will distill all the goodness they are discovering in red wine into pill form and ruin it all for everyone.

22. The hole in the earth’s ozone layer is closing - and could be entirely closed by 2050. Meanwhile, the amount of greenhouse gases is increasing.
– Wait a minute. Al, I thought the greenhouse gases were causing the hole to get bigger. Note to self, Netflix the Al Gore DVD, An Inconvenient Truth.

24. At least once a week, 28 percent of high school students fall asleep in school, 22 percent fall sleep while doing homework and 14 percent get to school late or miss school because they overslept.
– Please. Like anyone who has gone through high school does not know this. Wait til they get to college.. ;-)
32. Just 30 minutes of continuous kissing can diminish the body’s allergic reaction to pollen, relaxing the body and reducing production of histamine, a chemical cell given out in response to allergens.
– Ok, this one is my favorite! Now you just need to find a hot girl that is allergic to pollen.

43. Sleeping in on Saturday and Sunday can disturb your body clock, leaving you fatigued at the start of the week.
– Yeah, but it was the late night drinking, necessitated by job stress and frustration, that caused me to oversleep, thereby disturbing my body clock, causing the fatigue on Monday and therefore creating the job stress and frustration.

46. Photos taken of Mars in 1999 and 2005 show muddy sand, indicating there may have been a flood sometime between those years.
– Woohoo, Total Recall here we come.

49. One of the most effective ways for athletes to recover after exercise is to drink a glass of chocolate milk.
– Not sure Gatorade is going to like this. Football games win would look a lot different when the coach get covered in chocolate milk.

WoW Burning Crusade Expansion - January 16th

World of Warcraft - The Burning CrusadeFor anyone that plays WoW (World of Warcraft), you already know that the new expansion will be released on January 16th, and most already have their Collector’s edition on order and anxiously awaiting with baited breath for the UPS guy to know on there door on Tuesday. (Myself included, see previous post: World of Warcraft - Burning Crusade Expansion - Collectors Edition)

All that being said, I am browsing through the BBC News website, because the BBC has not forgotten what ‘real’ journalism is, unlike their US counterparts - after some of the regional political pages, I clicked on the Technology home page. I was rather surprised to see at the top of the page - the main headline: Date given for Warcraft expansion.

Wow, WoW makes front page news on the BBC News. Given that 7 million player subscribe to WoW globally…maybe it is not a big thing. I mean it was side-by-side with the Apple iPhone.

Burning Crusade Highlights:

  • Level cap increased to 70
  • Two new playable races - Blood Elf (Horde) and Draenei (Alliance)
  • Opening up of class structure. Horde can play paladins, Alliance can play shamans
  • New spells and talents for high-level characters
  • Expanded talent trees
  • New starting zones for new races, entire new continent Outland and new high-level dungeons.
  • New profession, Jewel crafting and introduction of socketed items
  • Introduction of flying mounts
  • Honor system to be scrapped
  • Introduction of player-v-player arenas
  • If you want to get an idea of what is coming in the Burning Crusade Expansion - checkout the Preview Trailers and Cinematic Intro Movie. ..and yes, I did say Into Movie and trailers - games are BIG business now. One small thing to think about as far as big business. WoW has around 7 million subscribers all paying approximately $15/month. (Now before you start with any OMG about the month charge - Everquest set this standard for this back in 1999, and people have been paying it every since.) That is $15/month x 7 million — that is alot of money!

So next week if you are online with the new expansion on WoW - look me up. My main is Oaryon on the Durotan server.

Bipartisan Network Neutrality Bill Introduced in Senate

Thanks Senator Snowe & Dorgan. In the article, a trade union group representing telecommunication companies states:

Regulation “would mean all of us losing advances in home health monitoring, greater security of our financial transactions, new entertainment choices and telecommuting opportunities,” said Walter B. McCormick Jr., President and CEO of USTelecom.

Mr. McCormick, would you mind explaining how keeping the Internet the way it has been for over a decade now is going to stop advances? Keeping the Internet open so ‘anyone’ can innovate, so the Googles, Amazons, eBays, etc. can actually come into being - so you are saying that the current progress of advancement and innovation over the past decade is the wrong direction, we should change it now, and turn the Internet into a toll highway. The purpose of a toll road is to collect a money - and just who will be getting that money. Hmmm, sounds a bit self-serving.

    justisengard dugg this:

It didn’t take long for network neutrality to reappear before Congress. Only days into the new session, two senators have teamed up to re-introduce net neutrality legislation that failed to get a hearing last year, and the bill is already sparking very public debate.

The War Profiteering Prevention Act of 2007

You mean this is not already a law? You have got to be kidding! So it is legal to defraud the government. Amazing.
Well, let see if we can now pass a law that makes it illegal. I would really like to understand how you can be against this being law. The article states that Senator Leahy tried to get this signed into law back in 2003, but the President and House Republicans got it removed. First, Mr. President and House Republicans - do you mind providing an explanation on why this should not be illegal. Second, why can we not simply have a single bill for a single law and vote on it - not a system where you can tack on appendixes to the original bill that have nothing to do with it.

    justisengard dugg this:

Sen. Leahy (D-VT) introduced a bill today, simply called The War Profiteering Prevention Act of 2007, targeting fraud by gov’t contractors supporting the occupation of Iraq and the response to Hurricane Katrina. Such profiteering would be a felony under Leahy’s legislation, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and fines of $1 million…
