Myth: Corn Ethanol is Great

Check this out. It takes more energy and resources to produce ethanol than it makes. One fact that is very revealing.  If we turned all the corn produced in the USA to ethanol, it would only produce enough to fuel 12% of US automobiles.
The underlying reasons for all this comes out in the end when the politicians, just seem to loose all coherent thought and understanding of the English language, and just repeat, “Ethanol is good for America’ no matter the evidence presented.  And, guess what, as always, there is some powerful corporation that stands to benefit from this illogic - ADM. (sigh)

Firefox Is Getting Mac OS X-native Controls

Woohoo!!

justisengard dugg this:

Mozilla’s Firefox is one of the most popular browsers out there; however, Mac users don’t love it nearly as much as they could. One of the main reasons why this happens is the lack of an OS X look and feel for the application. Fortunately, it looks like the developers have listened to the users.

More FDA Protectionism - Sweeteners

Just can across this article, link from another of Puken Luken’s posts.
Bitter Battle over Truth in Sweetners

The major part of the article talks about the artificial sweetners, Equal and Splenda and their court battle over advertising.
I refuse to use either one. At least when i am aware that they are in something. Both give me headaches. Just give me sugar - it has been used for hundreds of years. If Americans would simply use a bit of will power, and take responsibility for their actions….but oh, is that such a dream.

Just in case you did not know, the jury is still out on the possible health effects on consuming Equal and Splenda. So use it at your own risk.

The more interesting part of the article is about a natural sweetener that the good folks at the FDA (bought and paid for by you industry of choice) refuse to let into the country.

It is a mystery why stevia, a South American plant more than 300 times
sweeter than sugar, remains illegal for use as a sweetener in the
United States. This essentially zero-calorie natural product has been
used for decades in many countries and is deemed safe by the WHO. Could
it be that the mighty U.S. sugar and corn syrup industries have
pressured the FDA not to approve it?

Some U.S. stores are now carrying stevia as a dietary supplement. But
stevia growers are bit players in the billion-dollar sweetener market
dominated by slick ad campaigns.

Senate kisses Big Drug Company Ass

After reading a post on Puken Luken’s blog this morning, Senate gets on its knees to pay their debts to Big Pharma Pimps, I was motivated to checkout which Senators sponsored this bill.

S.AMDT.1010 : Sponsor: Sen Thad Cochran (R-MS)
Amendment Purpose: To protect the health and safety of the public.

OMG, read the amendment purpose. This is such a joke. Purpose: Protect American Drug Companies profits. I mean, please, it is not like we are asking to buy drugs from some out of the way third or fourth world nation that no one has ever heard of.

The vote neutralized a second amendment, later passed on a voice vote, that would legalize the importation of prescription drugs manufactured in Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan and New Zealand. (Senate Votes Blocks Imported Drugs)

Yeah, people are dying right and left in these countries. In fact, the citizens are the above countries are generally consider in much better health that Americans.

Outside of Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) being on the Big Drug lobby payroll, the following are the bill’s co-sponsors.

Sen Carper, Thomas R. [DE]
Sen Nelson, E. Benjamin [NE]
Sen Hatch, Orrin G. [UT]
Sen Bennett, Robert F. [UT]
Sen Enzi, Michael B. [WY]
Sen Burr, Richard [NC]
Sen Menendez, Robert [NJ]
Sen Specter, Arlen [PA]
Sen Domenici, Pete V. [NM]

When I saw that my own Senator, Richard Burr, co-sponsored this bill, well I reckon that means he is making sure he kisses GlaxoSmith-Kliene and Merck’s ass.

It really bothers me that this was done under the guise of protecting the American public, and even states this in the amendment purpose — and so blatantly obvious that it is a complete and utter lie.

Sen. Mike Enzi, a Wyoming Republican, said the requirement for a safety certification was essential to protect the public.

Senator Mike Enzi is the citizens of Wyoming’s issue, but Senator Richard Burr is the responsibility of the citizens of North Carolina.

If this bothers you at all, I encourage you to write Senator Burr to express your opposition to his sponsorship of this Senate bill. Ask him to support the following bill S.242:

S.242:
Title:
A bill to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act with respect to the importation of prescription drugs, and for other purposes.
Sponsor: Sen Dorgan, Byron L. [ND] (introduced 1/10/2007) Cosponsors (33)
Related Bills: H.R.380

A similar bill is pending in the House. I would encourage you to let your Congressman know your feelings as well. (Write your Representative) Ask them to support HR.380:

H.R.380
Title: To amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act with respect to the importation of prescription drugs, and for other purposes.
Sponsor: Rep Emanuel, Rahm [IL-5] (introduced 1/10/2007) Cosponsors (93)
Related Bills: S.242

Oh, and just so you know the following Senators could not be bothered to actually show up and do their job, and vote.

S.1010: Not Voted 11
Allard (R-CO), Biden (D-DE), Brownback (R-KS), Dodd (D-CT), Ensign (R-NV), Inhofe (R-OK), Johnson (D-SD), McCain (R-AZ), Obama (D-IL), Reed (D-RI), Tester (D-MT)

The one that disappoints me most is Obama. (sigh)

Woman Offended by Starbucks cup

Lady get over it. Just do not go back to Starbucks. We still have the First Amendment. (We still do right, President Bombs-a-lot has not passed an Executive Order temporarily disbanding it in the name of National Security yet…has he?) You, lady, one of the founding principles of our country. You should look it up, there is nothing in there about worrying about being politically correct or offending people.

US Military Blocks US Soldiers Access to YouTube and other sites

US blocks soldiers from websites

The article is a bit confusing. on the one hand, a General states that use of YouTube, MySpace and 11 other sites will be blocked.

The US says the use is taking up too much bandwidth and slows down the military’s computer system.

Later it states that the Pentagon has setup a new channel on YouTube that is now very popular.

The Pentagon only recently started posting its own
videos on YouTube, showing soldiers in action in Iraq in a move
designed to reach out to a younger audience and to show the successes
of the US military.

In two months, the Multi-National Force-Iraq channel has
climbed to 16th in YouTube’s most subscribed-to listing and has, the
military says, just passed the one million video-views mark.

If bandwidth is a problem and the use of YouTube and MySpace by US soldiers slows down military computers, then we ave serious problems with the network design they are using. Sounds like to me what we need is some good Network Engineers, not censorship. I would have hoped that the US soldier’s access to the Internet was on a separate physical network that the ‘military computers’ - you know, for security reasons. Or at least VLAN the US soldier’s off and restrict them by QoS. (sigh…)
