Safety Council Calls for Cell Phone Ban

So the National Safety Council wants to ban cell phone use in cars.  Not just the use of the hand-held device, but bluetooth, non-hand-held devices as well.

Safety Council Calls For Cell Phone Ban

So talking on a cell phone while driving is bad, because you are not concentrating on the road.   I do not think anyone disagrees with this.  The article says that talking on a hands-free device makes you four times more likely to crash.

“Everybody agrees with this study or report that cell phone use
completely should be banned because it’s more of a mental thing. You’re
not concentrating on driving.”

So it is about not concentrating on driving.  Hmmm, well what about talking to others in the car.  You know having a verbal conversation with others while driving.  If I am using a hands-free device to talk, such as a speaker phone built into the car or a bluetooth ear piece — how is that any different?  Are they going to ban anything that distracts the driver from concentrating on driving.  What about music?  What about eating and drinking in the car?  If we are going to ban one, we should ban them all.

I am typically against any paternalistic laws, but I can see the logic and restricting the use of hand-held cell phone use.  You only have one hand to drive.  However, banning the use of hand-free devices is going a bit too far.

Cell Phones & Your Brain

Fears About Link Between Cell Phones and Cancer Re-EmergeCheck out this article: Fears About Link Between Cell Phones and Cancer Re-Emerge.

Seems the cell phone antenna emits microwave radiation at least an inch from the phone. So when you are holding the cell phone to your ear, unless you have big thick ears, you are frying a bit of your brain.

Cell phones emit low doses of microwave radiation that destroy rat brain cells and memory and reach one inch into the human brain.

Wow, looks like I should start using my ear piece more. You know, maybe this would help those idiot drivers with one hand on the steering wheel and one holding their cell phone to their head.

Larry King recently featured three well-respected neurosurgeons on Larry King Live to talk about whether cell phones increase the risk of cancer. Each surgeon indicated that they do not hold their cell phones up to their ears when using them. Keith Black, a surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles said “I think the safe practice is to use an earpiece so you keep the microwave antenna away from your brain.

So what is the take away from all this? Frying your brain with microwave energy is baaad. You have two choices: One, do not use a cell phone or two, get a ear piece.

The Army Admits to Dumping 64 million pounds of chemicals in our Coast

Munition DumpingWonder what this is doing to all the seafood that we are eating, much less those swimming in the ocean.

justisengard dugg this:

“The Army now admits that it secretly dumped 64 million pounds of nerve and mustard agents into the sea, along with 400,000 chemical-filled bombs, land mines and rockets and more than 500 tons of radioactive waste – either tossed overboard or packed into the holds of scuttled vessels.”

More FDA Protectionism – Sweeteners

Just can across this article, link from another of Puken Luken’s posts.
Bitter Battle over Truth in Sweetners

The major part of the article talks about the artificial sweetners, Equal and Splenda and their court battle over advertising.
I refuse to use either one. At least when i am aware that they are in something. Both give me headaches. Just give me sugar – it has been used for hundreds of years. If Americans would simply use a bit of will power, and take responsibility for their actions….but oh, is that such a dream.

Just in case you did not know, the jury is still out on the possible health effects on consuming Equal and Splenda. So use it at your own risk.

The more interesting part of the article is about a natural sweetener that the good folks at the FDA (bought and paid for by you industry of choice) refuse to let into the country.

It is a mystery why stevia, a South American plant more than 300 times
sweeter than sugar, remains illegal for use as a sweetener in the
United States. This essentially zero-calorie natural product has been
used for decades in many countries and is deemed safe by the WHO. Could
it be that the mighty U.S. sugar and corn syrup industries have
pressured the FDA not to approve it?

Some U.S. stores are now carrying stevia as a dietary supplement. But
stevia growers are bit players in the billion-dollar sweetener market
dominated by slick ad campaigns.
