‘Golden Compass’ incenses both Christians and atheists

‘Golden Compass’ incenses both Christians and atheists

Ok, as Puken Luken stated to me earlier today, any movie that gets this many people upset, I gotta see.

It amazes me when religious folks or other groups with ideologies complain about movies and such, and then say to never see then.  If your religion, faith or ideology cannot stand up to a little scrutiny and a couple of questions, then maybe it is not as strong as one thought in the first place.  Good ideas, faiths and ideologies are the ones that can stand up to the strongest scrutiny, questions and challenges.  To me, it speaks volumes about the strength of the religion, if they fear one movie or book.

Do Christians Need Proof?

In my typical friends blog reviews I came across a post on Puken Luken’s blog (Jesus: Tales from the Crypt) about a new documentary by James Cameron.  The documentary will claim the following:

In a new documentary, Producer Cameron and his director, Simcha Jacobovici, make the starting claim that Jesus wasn’t resurrected –the cornerstone of Christian faith– and that his burial cave was discovered near Jerusalem. And, get this, Jesus sired a son with Mary Magdelene.

Puken Luken states in his blog that he is not going to touch this with a ten foot pole.  I reckon I am a bit braver.

I am unsure why Christians are upset about this.  Faith by definition does not require proof or evidence.  It is one of those things you either have or you do not.  There is no inbetween - sort of like being pregnant.  If Christians have faith and and a daily personal relationship with Jesus (as many repeatedly state), why should the specific details of where Jesus was buried or if he had a child with Mary Magdelene matter.  Does the fact that this was discovered or that a documentary is being produced, change that relationship with Jesus?  If so, it would seem to me that you never really had faith or a personal relationship with Jesus to being with.  So, if Jesus had a family - does this change his teachings, does it change the message - no.  All it really changes is what the Catholic Church professed for centuries.  These are the same folks that centuries ago said that you could only know God through them.  Now, should the Cathlolic Church be concerned - most definately, and this would undermine the authority that have proclaimed for centuries.  However, for the individual that 3 months ago had faith in God and a personal relationship with Jesus - this changes nothing.  If it does - you never had faith to begin with.
